The Woodland Garden

Back

On one patch we cleared the ground of some old juniper and rubiginosa-roses, intermingling with ground-elder. I rolled out an old carpet, used by the cellulose- industry here in town, right over the weeds. I filled up to about one meter's depth with stone, grit, peat and I collected spruce needles in big plastic-bags out in the forest to mix in and a sprinkle of fertilizer to start up with. In the front a row of sleepers. Never had any trouble with weeding here! It made a good place for a lot of smaller woodland-plants and no trouble with bending down either.

Mixed cyclamen from seed.

Keep the seeds in darkness between a humid coffee-filter in a plastic-box. The temperature must be between 12 and 18 degrees Celsius.  Check for mould. Remove any infected seed with a pair of tweezers. Insert the seed as they germinate with the tweezers on a light compost, protected by a cover of plastic in the light until they are rooted, protected from sun. Very amusing to deal with.

Two species of ferns. I once bought a lot of interesting ferns from the late Herdersson in Furet, Smaland.. Unfortunately the labels have disappeared over the time. Perhaps someone can  inform me of the names?

I had a few hostas, but as the garden got more and more shadow, the trees growing tall, I had to find some new plants. I then happened to pick up "The Hosta Book" by Paul Aden and got stuck. They are in all sizes. The Hosta 'Zounds' comes bright gold in the evening-light.
