In the year 1972 I visited the wellknown plantsman Aksel Olsen at Kolding in Denmark. He was renowned for his breeding of Rhododendron - among other things. (He was the first growing bamboos and the first to receive seeds of Metasequoia to propagate in Denmark). I asked him to choose a couple of good Rhods for a beginner, as I at that time had no experience at all of these. He gave me the yellow Rhod. ambiguum , Rhod. concinnum: purpur-red rounded bush up to 2 m., Rhod. impeditum: purple-blue and prostrate azalea, Rhod. luteum for the vivid sweet fragrance, Rhod. mucronatum azalea-hybrid - wonderful white and fragrant!  Plus the Rhododendron repens-hybrid named 'Aksel Olsen' (1962) by Dietrich Hobbie, the famous breeder in Oldenburg, Germany. The mother was Rhod. Essex Scarlet and the father Rhod. Forrestii (var.repens). It is really blood-red!

At the age of 85 years A.O. just kept a square of land by his house to breed his new Rhododendrons. - "as an insurance for his old age" as he put it. In the middle of the plot stands one of the first of the Metasequoia in Denmark.
