The old apple-trees together with Spiraea arguta. These trees- a 'Signe Tillish' and a 'Cox Pomona' were old and in a bad state when we first tried to get them in shape. The fruit was small and badly infected. You couldn't possibly prune them into "clean" wood. So I just cut out some of the worst damages and started feeding them by making holes in the earth all around the trunks with the help of an iron-bar lever and fill in with fertilizer and water. Kept  on watering in dry periods and kept to this management for some years. They gave wonderful crops all the years until we had to take 'Cox Pomona'down with the building of the new house -  after 25 years! A few years ago 'Signe Tillish' broke down in one of the heavy storms we have had lately.
